medtigo ACLS

The Advanced Cardiac Life Support {ACLS} course encompasses a set of clinical algorithms that help in the management of heart attacks, stroke, and other cardiovascular emergencies. The course is offered as two options: ACLS online training online or an ACLS Study Guide. ACLS online recertification and training is available to qualified healthcare personnel. The coursework covers the interpretation of electrocardiograms, the effective use of medications, and the process of initiating vascular access. Things that every healthcare professional needs to know to handle neurologic and cardiac emergencies.

The ACLS Certification Course builds on the elements covered in the BLS course, and it is therefore recommended that course participants earn BLS certification before starting the online ACLS Certification. The logic of this is that, in a cardiac or neurologic emergency, the very first action is to initiate the Chain of Survival, and this sometimes involves the use of an AED – a skill that is covered in the BLS course.

Below is information on what the ACLS course entails.

What does the course cover?

ACLS training is meant to help healthcare workers improve the survival rates of adults who suffer neurologic and cardiac emergencies. Some of the topics covered in the coursework for ACLS online recertification and training are:

  • Basic life support skills such as the use of AEDs, chest compressions, and bag-mask devices
  • Recognition & initial management of cardiac and respiratory arrest
  • Recognition & management of pre- and peri-arrest conditions such as symptomatic bradycardia
  • Airway management
  • Use of drugs to manage various cardiac & neurologic emergencies
  • Effective communication within a resuscitation team as a leader or team member
  • Interpretation of an electrocardiogram

Types of algorithms in ACLS

The current guidelines for free ACLS certification online include understanding and recognition of different algorithms. Algorithms are sets of standardized instructions on the management of different cardiac and neurologic emergencies. The algorithms are presented in the form of flowcharts that require yes-or-no decisions when handling emergencies.

The following are subjects of ACLS algorithms:

  • Cardiac arrest
  • Bradycardia
  • Tachycardia
  • Respiratory arrest
  • Opioid emergency
  • Pulseless electrical activity
  • Suspected stroke
  • Post-cardiac arrest
  • Ventricular fibrillation
