What level of PPE should health care providers wear to minimize exposure?

The CDC currently recommends all healthcare personnel evaluating a person under investigation (PUI) for COVID-19 or patients with confirmed COVID-19 to use Standard and Transmission-based Precautions as detailed at: See section 2 for specific recommendations regarding hand-hygiene and personal protective equipment. As of March 16, eye protection, gowns and gloves continue to be recommended, with face mask or respirator depending on local analysis of PPE supply chain. Can I work my shifts if I have come into close contact with a patient who has tested COVID-19 positive?

Our sites have the ultimate decision about continuing shift work for providers who have come into close contact with patients with documented COVID-19. In conjunction with CDC guidelines available at: for quarantine as well as individual client site policies, we will determine the need to vacate shifts. Careful and reliable use of PPE will help maintain your ability to work scheduled shifts.

Will you help me track my ability to start working again if I am quarantined?

Yes, using standardized tracking protocols, we will record the date of close contact to a confirmed COVID-19 case. Then, in conjunction with CDC quarantine guidelines available at: as well as individual client site policies, we will help determine any need to vacate shifts as well as when you can return to work.

Will I be paid for my shifts if I am not allowed to work at our client sites?

Usually our organization is paid only for shifts actually worked, so the same is true for our providers. If any client site has a policy that reimburses us for a vacated shift, we will pay the scheduled provider.

We recommend the following sources for reliable information. The CDC offers a practical guide for risk assessment and management of healthcare providers exposed to a COVID-19 patient. They also offer standardized recommendations for PPE when caring for patients with documented or suspected COVID-19. Although dated at this point to some degree, this Grand Rounds presented by the Greater Boston Consortium for Pathogen Readiness is worth watching at: MGH Grand Rounds presented on March 12, 2020.

How can I cope with the increased stress and anxiety I am feeling?

As a medical profession we are being called upon to rise to the challenge society faces, but we are individuals ourselves with personal needs. We want to encourage our providers to be aware of their own state-of-mind and use resources such as Headspace to help with stress and anxiety levels and to seek additional help if necessary.
