Actions and SpectrumÂ
A penicillin beta-lactam antibiotic called hetacillin is used to treat bacterial infections brought on by susceptible, typically gram-positive, organisms. Hetacillin is active against both anaerobic and aerobic gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Â

Pregnancy consideration:Â
Pregnancy category: N/AÂ
Lactation: Excretion into human milk is unknown Â
Pregnancy Categories:        Â
Category A: well-controlled and Satisfactory studies show no risk to the fetus in the first or later trimester.Â
Category B: there was no evidence of risk to the fetus in animal studies, and there were not enough studies on pregnant women. Â
Category C: there was evidence of risk of adverse effects in animal reproduction studies, and no adequate evidence in human studies must take care of potential risks in pregnant women.Â
Category D: adequate data with sufficient evidence of human fetal risk from various platforms, but despite the potential risk, and used only in emergency cases for potential benefits.Â
Category X: Drugs listed in this category outweigh the risks over benefits. Hence these categories of drugs need to be avoided by pregnant women.Â
Category N: There is no data available for the drug under this category.Â
Pharmacology Â
Hetacillin is a semisynthetic penicillin prodrug that lacks antibacterial activity on its own but is transformed into ampicillin by the body.Â
The side chain amino group’s intramolecular attack on the lactam ring causes ampicillin to break down quickly.Â
PharmacodynamicsÂ
Hetacillin prevents its own breakdown by enclosing the offending amino group. In susceptible bacteria, ampicillin binds to the penicillin binding proteins. Â
Autolytic enzymes found in bacterial cell walls, like autolysins, then mediate cell lysis.Â
PharmacokineticsÂ
Limited information available on ADME.Â
AdministrationÂ
Fill each infected quarter with one syringe’s full contents. Continue for a maximum of three treatments at 24-hour intervals.Â
48 hours after treatment, if a clear improvement is not observed, more research on the causative organism needs to be done.Â
Use separate paper towels to dry the udder and teats after giving them a thorough wash in warm water with a dairy antiseptic of your choice. Â
Using a different swab for each teat, carefully scrub the orifice and teat end with 70% alcohol and permit to air dry.

Generic Name: hetacillinÂ
Why do we use hetacillin?Â
Hetacillin is indicated for the treatment of mastitis in lactating cows which is caused by susceptible strains of Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus dysgalactiae, and Streptococcus agalactiae.Â
