Topical Cream  Â
0.2%Â Â Â
Indicated for Burns, Skin infections, Wounds, Ulcers:
Apply a 0.2% topical treatment to the affected region.
Dosage Forms & StrengthsÂ
Safety and efficacy not establishedÂ
Refer adult dosingÂ
Actions and Spectrum:Â Â Â
Nitrofurazone inhibits the aerobic and anaerobic enzymes involved in the degradation of pyruvate glucose. This affects pyruvate dehydrogenase, malate dehydrogenase and glutathione reductase.Â
Spectrum of Activity:Â Â Â
Nitrofural has activity against gram positive and gram-negative bacteria including Escherichia coli and Enterobacter species.Â
Frequency not defined  Â
peripheral neuropathy  Â
Allergic skin reactions  Â
Sensitization Â
Black box warning:Â Â Â
None Â
Contraindications/caution:Â Â Â
Hypersensitivity reactionsÂ
Pregnancy Warnings:Â
Pregnancy category: Not available  Â
Lactation: Excretion of drug into breast milk is unknownÂ
Pregnancy Categories:Â Â Â
Category A: Satisfactory and well-controlled studies show no evidence of risk to the fetus in the first trimester or in the later trimester.  Â
<b>Category B: No evidence of risk to fetus found in animal reproduction studies and there are not enough studies on pregnant women.  Â
Category C: Adverse effects on the fetus found with evidence in animal reproduction studies and no adequate evidence for an effect in humans, care must be taken for potential risks in pregnant women.  Â
Category D: There is adequate data available with sufficient evidence of human fetal risk from various platforms, but despite potential risks may be used only in emergency cases for potential benefits.  Â
Category X: Drugs listed in this category clearly outweigh risks over benefits. These category drugs should be prohibited for pregnant women.  Â
Category N: There is no data available for the drug under this category.   Â
Pharmacology:Â Â Â
The mechanism of action is not known. Nitrofurazone inhibits the aerobic and anaerobic enzymes involved in the degradation of glucose and pyruvate. This affects pyruvate dehydrogenase, pyruvate decarboxylase and glutathione reductase.Â
Pharmacodynamics:Â Â Â Â
Nitrofurazone is used to treat burns. It is also indicated in skin grafting when bacterial contamination causes donor site infection and graft rejection with resistant bacteria. Â
Pharmacokinetics:Â Â Â
Absorption  Â
Nitrofural is applied topically and gets well absorbed.  Â
Distribution  Â
Systemic distribution occurs only in distinct tissues.  Â
Metabolism  Â
Nitrofural undergoes metabolic reduction at the nitro group to generate reactive species, which bind to cellular macromolecules. Â
Elimination and Excretion  Â
The drug and its metabolites are eliminated through the skin. The elimination half-life is 5 hours. Â
Administration:Â Â Â
Topical administration  Â
Nitrolfural is available in creams and ointments for topical application to the skin. Â
Patient information leaflet  Â
Generic Name: nitrofural  Â
Why do we use nitrofural?  Â
Nitrofural treats bacterial skin infections, including wounds, cuts, burns and ulcers. Â
