21.1 mg Â
Administer as a single dose of 12.5 mg/kg orally of total body weight
Not determinedÂ
Refer to adult dosingÂ
Actions and SpectrumÂ
pyrantel tartrate acts as a neuromuscular blocking agent. It paralyzes the muscle cells of parasitic worms by interfering with the neurotransmission at the neuromuscular junction. This leads to the expulsion of the worms from the intestines through normal peristaltic movements.

Pregnancy consideration:Â
Pregnancy category: N/AÂ
Lactation: Excretion into human milk is unknown Â
Pregnancy Categories:        Â
Category A: well-controlled and Satisfactory studies show no risk to the fetus in the first or later trimester.Â
Category B: there was no evidence of risk to the fetus in animal studies, and there were not enough studies on pregnant women. Â
Category C: there was evidence of risk of adverse effects in animal reproduction studies, and no adequate evidence in human studies must take care of potential risks in pregnant women.Â
Category D: adequate data with sufficient evidence of human fetal risk from various platforms, but despite the potential risk, and used only in emergency cases for potential benefits.Â
Category X: Drugs listed in this category outweigh the risks over benefits. Hence these categories of drugs need to be avoided by pregnant women.Â
Category N: There is no data available for the drug under this category.Â
Pharmacology Â
pyrantel tartrate works as a neuromuscular blocking agent. It paralyzes the muscle cells of parasitic worms by interfering with neurotransmission at the neuromuscular junction. Â
pyrantel does not kill the worms and immobilizes them which allows the host’s immune system to remove them.Â
PharmacodynamicsÂ
Activation of nicotinic receptors by pyrantel tartrate leads to depolarization of the muscle cells, causing a sustained contraction.Â
This sustained contraction results in paralysis of the worm’s musculature. The paralysis of the worm’s musculature interferes with its ability to maintain attachment to the host’s intestinal wall.Â
PharmacokineticsÂ
Limited information available on ADME.Â
AdministrationÂ
pyrantel tartrate is taken orally in the form pellets.Â
