Actions and spectrum:Â
The hormone GHRH, or somatorelin, is a synthetic form of a hormone that is found naturally. It acts in two different ways:Â
Human growth hormone receptors (GHRs) are expressed in target cells, with the liver and cartilage being the primary sites of binding for somatorelin.Â
GHR binds, forms a dimer, and interacts with the protein JAK2 (Janus kinase 2.Â
The GH receptor and JAK2 are tyrosine phosphorylated due to an association between JAK2 and GHR.Â
Â
Frequency not definedÂ
Taste disturbancesÂ
Pain at the site of injectionÂ
Altered smellÂ
Hot flushesÂ
Altered heart rateÂ
Sensation of warmthÂ
Black Box Warning Â
Ensure that resuscitation facilities will be available immediatelyÂ
Contraindication/Caution:Â
Contraindication:Â
PregnancyÂ
Breastfeeding Â
Precautions:Â
HyperglycemiaÂ
Elevated somatostatin levelsÂ
EpilepsyÂ
Uncontrolled hyperthyroidismÂ
Elevated levels of plasma fatty acidÂ
Pregnancy consideration:Â Â
It is contraindicated for use in pregnancy. Somatorelin may cause miscarriage by reducing the flow of blood to the uterus. Â
Lactation:Â Â
Data about the excretion of somatorelin into breast milk is not known.Â
Pregnancy categories:Â Â
Category A: Studies that were well-controlled and met expectations revealed no risk to the fetus in either the first or second trimester.Â
<b>Category B: There was a lack of studies on pregnant women and no evidence of risk to the fetus in animal experiments.  Â
Category C: there was evidence of risk of adverse effects in animal reproduction studies, and no adequate evidence in human studies must take care of potential risks in pregnant women.   Â
Category D: adequate data with sufficient evidence of human fetal risk from various platforms, but despite the potential risk, and used only in emergency cases for potential benefits.  Â
Category X: Drugs listed in this category outweigh the risks over benefits. Hence, these categories of drugs need to be avoided by pregnant women.   Â
Category N: There is no data available for the drug under this category Â
Pharmacology:Â
Somatorelin is a synthetic form of naturally occurring growth hormone.Â
Pharmacodynamics:Â
Somatorelin stimulates growth, enhances metabolic effects, and produces erythropoietin by triggering growth hormone receptors. It also exerts diabetogenic effects and enhances transmucosal transport.Â
Pharmacokinetics:Â
Limited data availableÂ
Â
Administration:Â
Somatorelin should be administered parenterally as suggested by the doctorÂ

Generic Name: somatorelinÂ
Pronounced: so-ma-toe-re-linÂ
Why do we use somatorelin?Â
Somatorelin is a synthetic growth-regulating hormone. It is used as a diagnostic agent to test for growth hormone deficiency. It is also used to study sleep disorders, aging, and cognitive impairment.Â
