Actions and spectrum:
The hormone GHRH, or somatorelin, is a synthetic form of a hormone that is found naturally. It acts in two different ways:
Human growth hormone receptors (GHRs) are expressed in target cells, with the liver and cartilage being the primary sites of binding for somatorelin.
GHR binds, forms a dimer, and interacts with the protein JAK2 (Janus kinase 2.
The GH receptor and JAK2 are tyrosine phosphorylated due to an association between JAK2 and GHR.
Frequency not defined
Taste disturbances
Pain at the site of injection
Altered smell
Hot flushes
Altered heart rate
Sensation of warmth
Black Box Warning
Ensure that resuscitation facilities will be available immediately
Contraindication/Caution:
Contraindication:
Pregnancy
Breastfeeding
Precautions:
Hyperglycemia
Elevated somatostatin levels
Epilepsy
Uncontrolled hyperthyroidism
Elevated levels of plasma fatty acid
Pregnancy consideration:
It is contraindicated for use in pregnancy. Somatorelin may cause miscarriage by reducing the flow of blood to the uterus.
Lactation:
Data about the excretion of somatorelin into breast milk is not known.
Pregnancy categories:
Category A: Studies that were well-controlled and met expectations revealed no risk to the fetus in either the first or second trimester.
<b>Category B: There was a lack of studies on pregnant women and no evidence of risk to the fetus in animal experiments.
Category C: there was evidence of risk of adverse effects in animal reproduction studies, and no adequate evidence in human studies must take care of potential risks in pregnant women.
Category D: adequate data with sufficient evidence of human fetal risk from various platforms, but despite the potential risk, and used only in emergency cases for potential benefits.
Category X: Drugs listed in this category outweigh the risks over benefits. Hence, these categories of drugs need to be avoided by pregnant women.
Category N: There is no data available for the drug under this category
Pharmacology:
Somatorelin is a synthetic form of naturally occurring growth hormone.
Pharmacodynamics:
Somatorelin stimulates growth, enhances metabolic effects, and produces erythropoietin by triggering growth hormone receptors. It also exerts diabetogenic effects and enhances transmucosal transport.
Pharmacokinetics:
Limited data available
Administration:
Somatorelin should be administered parenterally as suggested by the doctor

Generic Name: somatorelin
Pronounced: so-ma-toe-re-lin
Why do we use somatorelin?
Somatorelin is a synthetic growth-regulating hormone. It is used as a diagnostic agent to test for growth hormone deficiency. It is also used to study sleep disorders, aging, and cognitive impairment.
