Short- to intermediate-acting barbiturate talbutal was once used as a sedative and hypnotic, but the use was later discontinued.
Actions and Spectrum:
talbutal binds to GABAA receptors associated with a Cl- receptor. Upon binding, the tatbutal increases the time for Cl- to open, leading to a prolongled inhibitory effect of Gaba at the postsynaptic thalamic neuron.

Pharmacology:

Pharmacodynamics:
talbutal is capable of producing CNS alternations from excitation to mild sedation, hypnosis, and deep coma. Barbiturates can also be used to induce anesthesia at high doses.
