According to recent research, antidepressants benefit about 15% of patients. The remaining 85% can be treated by placebos but are unnecessarily exposed to the side effects of drugs, including sexual dysfunction, weight gain, and emotional numbing. This evidence caused havoc in the pharmaceutical sector.

Based on the simple hypothesis that chemical imbalance in the brain causes depression, pharmaceutical companies, since the 1950s, established a relationship between drugs and depression and developed antidepressants.

There is no evidence to support the chemical imbalance theory, and the mechanism of action of antidepressants remains unknown. This news outbreak has influenced patients’ drug choices and changed their perception of the outcome.

Antidepressants No Better Than Placebo for About 85% of People

On a recent studies revealed that The serotonin hypothesis of depression is still influential. And all antidepressants causes more than 20 to 40 % side effects followed by non responder or partial responders that lead to poor patient compliance.

I think to be implementing the Integrated Medicine, which not all are capable to practice it ,
Myself after from 1977 in public health practicing and having practiced in different Countries with their Cultural & Habit(Important achievement) only looking to a patient there is getting idea about the personality then dealing closely when is started the dialogue with mental-health-patient) and also it depends from person to person(But senior doctor who speaks different Languages could be more capable utilizing Integrated Medicine.
I think antidepressants do their effect, but then more using it, gradually goes of reduced its effect
(The antidepressant could not be considered a Placebo!)

Many factors should be considered why people are getting depressed, therefore some may not need antidepressant drug but psycho, socio and diversional therapy though some may have to use depending on initial cause. So antidepressant may be harmful to a particular person when proper medical history is not taken.

I work in an area in South Africa where cultural and traditional practices are still very much a part of the general populations lives. In the case of a patient that has not really been exposed to Western Medicine, the use of anti depressants could be counteracted by their traditional medication that their healers give them.
We as humans have become too dependent on a bottle with a solution in.
Nature still has the best medicine available, we are just to brain washed by big Pharma and their products.

The side effects of antidepressants are enormous, we should always do a thorough assessment on our clients before considering wether to go placebo or chemicals. Most of them are relieved when given placebo, which indicates, its effectiveness and level of their depression.
