Most patients with COVID-related headaches get a reduction in pain along with other symptoms. However, a recent study shows that up to 45% of individuals experience headaches even after other symptoms have subsided. Individuals experienced headaches sudden in onset without any triggering factor. The individuals would only get 15 to 45 minutes of sleep. Moreover, they continue to experience headaches daily. Neither Tylenol nor migraine medicine controlled the headache. The individuals suffered from pain that would usually travel to the back of the head and get worse on coughing or sneezing.
According to the study, there is a link between headaches and loss of taste and smell; thus, a possible reason could be the compromised olfactory system. COVID enters through the nose and causes nasal cavity irritation. The trigeminal nerve branches are activated, which might result in headaches. The exact mechanisms of a COVID-19 headache are still unknown. However, some potential causes include direct virus damage, an inflammatory response as the body fights the infection, and a lack of oxygen in the blood.
