Warm weather can improve mental health by encouraging people to get outside and soak up more Vitamin D. However, extreme heat can have the opposite effect, causing irritability, agitation, anxiety, and cognitive impairment. Research indicates that heat waves are associated with increased rates of suicide, domestic violence, substance use, and crime. High temperatures can also disrupt sleep, leading to increased irritability, frustration, and feelings of depression. Extreme heat can cause hormonal changes, such as increased levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, and reduced alertness and cognition. People may notice changes in their work habits, such as feeling less motivated or having difficulty starting or completing projects. Elevated temperatures can even reduce the effectiveness of certain medications. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heat-related deaths rose from 1,722 in 2022 to over 2,300 in 2023. Additionally, emergency room visits for mental health-related concerns increased as temperatures climbed.
