Are we still dismissing women’s medical complaints as hysteria?

  • Yes, women are disproportionately diagnosed for example with conversion or somatoform disorder
  • It’s hard to say because difficult to diagnose conditions are more prevalent in women
  • There may be some pockets of bias, but overall there is no culture in medicine of dismissing women’s complaints

We’re all aware of the historical bias which existed while diagnosing women in the past. For centuries, women’s health complaints were diagnosed as hysteria. Back then, doctors ignored the root cause of the disturbances, and prescribed women extremely unconventional treatments.

Even today, if diagnostic tools are unable to pin-point a specific condition in women, their symptoms are often diagnosed as psychosomatic or psychological. The possibility of women receiving this diagnosis is 10 times higher than it is for men.

So, it’s clear that the quality of healthcare for women has significantly improved over the years, but are we still carrying around that bias on some level?

Exactly that’s we can use it to get the proper diagnose and the way politeness and kindness should be included in our way of interrogation.

Who are the “We” in the survey?
Not every provider had that bias.
Some never did , and never will.
Probably best to ask those who had that type ,or that specific bias if they have had reason to practice differently or not.
