Is surgery a safe place for women to work today? “Not always. And that is a dreadful thing to admit,” says a senior female surgeon.

Female surgeons opened up about being sexually harassed, assaulted, and in some cases raped by colleagues, a major analysis has found. The study’s authors say there is a pattern of female trainees being abused by senior male surgeons. Sexual harassment, sexual assault, and rape have been referred to as surgery’s open secret. There is an untold story of women being fondled inside their scrubs, male surgeons wiping their brows on their breasts, and men rubbing erections against female staff. Some have been offered career opportunities for sex.
Nearly two-thirds of women surgeons who responded to the researchers said they had been the target of sexual harassment, and a third had been sexually assaulted by colleagues in the past five years. Women say they fear reporting incidents will damage their careers and lack confidence that the NHS will act. It is widely accepted that there is a culture of silence around such behavior. Surgical training relies on learning from senior colleagues in the operating theatre. Women think it is risky to speak out about those who have power and influence over their future careers.

They fear because of the effect it will have on their career and reputation. Women are mostly blamed for such unlawful acts eventhough they are the victims. That’s really unfair.

It’s also possible they many of the victims may also be comfortable with what happened that time.

From a past experience I found the the perpetrator had not been punished. Not even reprimanded. In fact those who knew his reputation kept quiet.

Most times the male leaders in the profession are the one carrying out these harassment. They expect the female to be their sex toys by using them to relief pressure and stress. The harassed are afraid of reporting due to the negative consequences on their career and they lack zero confidence that the organization will take action/punishment when the organization themselves are the major culprits and perpetrators.

Because they have not seen previous perpetrators being punished hence they feel it’s of no use reporting their own incident.

I think fear of not supporting by system and chance of losing the current status is the main reason.
