World Hypertension Day, observed on May 17 each year, “aims to increase awareness of this silent killer and galvanize global action to combat high blood pressure.” Stressing the importance of “early detection and control,” it is noted that half of the people with hypertension are unaware of their condition. Among adults with hypertension, nearly 1 in 6 do not have their blood pressure under control. Hypertension surpasses other modifiable risk factors like smoking, dyslipidemia, and diabetes in its prevalence and impact on heart health. Although only a few patients with apparent primary hypertension develop progressive kidney disease, the total number of patients with hypertension is so large that even a small percentage at risk constitutes a significant chronic kidney disease burden.
