20 Million Americans Secure Health Coverage Through Affordable Care Act

In a significant announcement, the Biden administration has disclosed that 20 million Americans have enrolled for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), marking a substantial achievement just days before the open enrollment period concludes.

President Joe Biden expressed his satisfaction with the milestone, stating, “Today, we hit a major milestone in lowering costs and ensuring all Americans have access to quality, affordable health care. With six days left to still get covered, 8 million more Americans have signed up for ACA coverage than when I took office.” The President emphasized the increasing popularity of the Affordable Care Act and highlighted the administration’s efforts in making coverage more affordable for millions of Americans.

The enrollment figures reveal a remarkable increase, with 20 million Americans securing health coverage this year, representing a 25% surge compared to the previous year’s record-breaking enrollment of 16.3 million individuals.

The Biden administration’s initiatives have played a pivotal role in this surge. Following Biden’s inauguration, Democrats introduced a series of tax breaks aimed at providing millions of Americans access to low-cost plans, including some with no premiums, as reported by the Associated Press. Additionally, significant investments were made in hiring navigators who assist individuals in the enrollment process, contributing to the heightened participation in the ACA.

However, the surge in enrollment may also encompass individuals affected by a recent development concerning Medicaid. Approximately 14.5 million Americans were removed from Medicaid rolls after the federal government lifted a pandemic ban, allowing states to remove ineligible individuals from the government-sponsored health insurance program.

The removal process, initiated by states last year, has faced challenges, leading to thousands of children and pregnant women being left without health insurance coverage in certain states, according to the AP. While the open enrollment for health insurance plans under the Affordable Care Act concludes on January 16, individuals who have been removed from Medicaid may still be eligible to enroll until the end of July.

President Biden’s emphasis on the affordability of ACA coverage aligns with the administration’s commitment to making healthcare more accessible. The President underscored that due to the administration’s efforts, millions of Americans are saving significant amounts annually on health insurance premiums. Moreover, the assertion that most individuals shopping for coverage on HealthCare.gov can find a plan for $10 a month or less aims to communicate the affordability achieved through recent policy measures.

The success in increasing ACA enrollment underscores the administration’s commitment to healthcare reform and its broader goal of expanding access to quality and affordable health services for all Americans. As the open enrollment period nears its end, the Biden administration’s efforts have resulted in a substantial number of Americans securing essential health coverage, contributing to a more inclusive and accessible healthcare landscape.
