On October 5, 2023, an event hosted by Moms for America featured a screening of the award-winning docudrama “Gender Transformation: The Untold Realities” and a panel discussion on the complex issues surrounding gender confusion in today’s culture.Â
The documentary showcases the real-life stories of individuals who went through gender transformation hormone regimens and surgery and later chose to detransition. “Detransitioning,” a term relatively unknown a few years ago, refers to the process of individuals who previously underwent gender transformation reversing their course, discontinuing cross-sex hormones, and sometimes undergoing additional surgeries to return to their biological sex.Â
These stories shed light on the challenges posed by the so-called “gender confusion social contagion.” Vulnerable young people are often led to believe that their identity lies in lifelong hormone treatment and potentially irreversible surgical procedures. This situation can lead children and teens to be estranged from their families, drawing them into political activist groups that celebrate and affirm their decisions to transition.Â
The stories of detransitioners reveal the significant harm that has been inflicted, particularly on young people who may not fully comprehend the long-term consequences of their choices. They face pressure from peers, teachers, counsellors, and school administrators to make life-altering decisions.Â
The panel discussion, co-hosted by Moms for America Vice President Debbie Kraulidis and board member Mercedes Schlapp, addressed the multifaceted aspects of gender confusion. It included insights from medical professionals, legal experts, legislators, and parents. Parents often find themselves on the front lines of this issue, with their concerns and objections often painted as opposition to their child’s well-being.Â
The “gender-affirming care” offered to young people does not always address the underlying psychological distress they may be experiencing. What these individuals need is support from their families and communities, rather than being encouraged to adopt a new identity that can jeopardize their physical and mental health.Â
Disturbing findings from a recent study highlighted the prevalence of gender transition surgeries among teenagers. Between 2016 and 2020, it’s estimated that 3,678 minors aged 12 to 18 underwent elective surgical procedures for gender transition. These surgeries included “breast/chest surgery,” “genital surgery,” and unspecified “cosmetic surgery,” which are not medically necessary and carry potential long-term health risks.Â
Parents must recognize the extent of the challenges they face. The statistics presented in the study are from several years ago, and with the increasing spread of gender confusion and the wider availability of hormones and surgeries, more young people are at risk of being subjected to these life-altering procedures. The experiences of detransitioners emphasize that gender transitions can have lasting effects on a young person’s life.
It’s crucial for parents to understand how these messages are reaching their children, often through social media and school-sanctioned programs. Suicide prevention programs, designed to provide essential support, have been co-opted to promote gender confusion among vulnerable youth. Informed parents are essential in addressing these issues and protecting their children.Â
Moms for America aims to empower parents with resources and connections to combat the misinformation that affects their children. By engaging with other parents and experts, parents can work together to counteract harmful influences and engage in open conversations with their children about the challenges posed by the gender confusion complex.Â
