Better Sleep Linked to Less Loneliness

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) says that getting enough sleep is very important for human health. The AASM and the Sleep Research Society suggest that adults should get seven hours of sleep every day for better health. It makes them healthy and productive. But a recent study has revealed that better sleep quality reduces the risk of loneliness. This research will be presented at SLEEP 2024 annual meeting on June 3. The abstract of this study was published in an online supplement of the journal Sleep.

In this study, researchers involved 2,297 adults. The average age of these adults was 44 years and 51% of them were men. These people completed an online survey. In this survey, they were asked about how many hours they slept and their levels of loneliness.

When researchers observed the collected data, they found lower levels of social and emotional loneliness in people who got proper sleep with good quality. This link between better sleep and lower loneliness was the same for all the participants of all ages. But it was stronger in younger adults. But researchers also have found that age did not specifically affect this link.

One of the researchers said that loneliness is a big public health problem. It is very important for healthcare professionals to understand and make strategies to manage it. They can make some effective strategies to improve the quality of sleep. It will help them to reduce the risk of loneliness.

The results of this study clearly show that the quality of sleep increases the risk of loneliness. So, healthcare professionals should make some effective strategies that can improve it.  It can reduce this risk of loneliness in younger adults. The results of this study will help many people as so many people are having problems related to loneliness.  But there is also a need for further research as the reason behind this link is still unclear.
