Amoxicillin, one of the most widely used antibiotics in the nation, is in short supply, according to federal health experts.

As per NBC News, the antibiotic is prescribed to treat bacterial illnesses, including pneumonia and bronchitis, and the Food and Drug Administration has issued a warning concerning an oral solution of it as pharmacy owners report dwindling supplies of the drug.

On October 28, the department reported a scarcity of an oral powder. Additionally, chewable pills and capsules of amoxicillin are offered.

An FDA representative said the agency was working with the drug’s authorized manufacturers and was aware of “intermittent supply interruptions.”

He continued by listing many variables, such as manufacturing and quality issues, delays, and discontinuations, that might lead to shortages.

Significant demand in the US, EU, and Canada, according to a Sandoz spokeswoman, has led to a “supply issue” that has been made worse by the pandemic’s effects, manufacturing limitations, and the energy crisis.

“We are currently in a particularly challenging circumstance,” she wrote in an email. “In order to discover strategies to manage this urgent crisis, we are collaborating with important parties, including governments.”
