Some breakthrough results were found in recent medical research. Cancer is considered to be one of the deadliest diseases. One of the major reasons is that most people are diagnosed with it in later stages when there is no cure.Â
In the latest study performed on a small group of 14 people, the medicine for cancer showed 100 percent results. This means that cancer in all the patients was vanished, as reported by the Washington Post. Â
The study was performed at the Memorial Sloan Lettering Cancer Center in New York. The treatment used in the trial showed effectiveness without any surgery or chemotherapy.Â
All the patients had a form of rectal cancer. They had tumors with the abnormality known as mismatch repair (MMR) deficiency. Â
The trial began in 2019. Sloan Kettering took 18 early-stage rectal cancer patients with a similar tumor mutation. The tumor completely disappeared in 14 patients by the time study was published. The remaining 4 are on a similar track. The best part was that none required follow-up treatment. Â
According to Scott Kopetz, a gastrointestinal medical oncology professor at MD Anderson Cancer Center, the study is a huge step in cancer advancement. “The idea of using immunotherapy in patients that have localized early-stage colorectal cancers certainly has been gaining momentum,” he said. Â
On the other hand, the director of clinical oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital, David Ryan, said, “We do worry that if recurrences happen, they have to be picked up as soon as possible to give people the best chance.” Â
Indeed the study was conducted on a small group of people, but the results were quite amazing. Cancer is responsible for killing nearly 10 million people every year.Â
