Colon cancer is a common cancer as it affects many people every year. The number of cases is continuously rising among Americans under the age of 50. It has now become the leading cause of death for men under the age of 50. It has also become the second most deadly cancer for women under the age of 50. So, researchers from the University of California conducted a new study and tried to find out some initial symptoms these people experience. This study was published in the journal JAMA Network Open on 24 May. In this study, researchers used data from 80 different studies. They almost involved 25 million people under the age of 50. Â
When researchers observed the collected data, they found that 45% of these people had blood in their stool at the initial stage. Then 40% of them had stomach cramps. On the other hand, 27% of them had changes in bowel habits. Researchers also found that the early diagnosis of colon cancer is very hard, even though these symptoms are very clear. Researchers of this study say that the diagnosis process of this cancer always takes a long time. The time from initial symptoms presentation to the diagnosis of colorectal cancer is between 4 and 6 months. Â
One of the researchers says that it is a very dangerous cancer as the number of cases has increased by 45% since 1995. So, young Americans need to know about symptoms that should be seen as the warning signs of this cancer. Blood in the stool is a primary initial symptom. But this can also indicate other gastrointestinal issues. But it is a significant risk factor for colon cancer in people under the age of 50. Â
This cancer can be treated effectively when diagnosed earlier. So, this study can help healthcare professionals to diagnose and treat people with this cancer earlier. Healthcare professionals can use stool-based tests and colonoscopy for early detection of this cancer. There is a need to spread awareness about these warning signs in people so that they can get medical help on time. Â
