The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently approved a neffy shot for anaphylaxis. It has become the first non-injected treatment for life-threatening allergic reactions. It provides a new alternative for those hesitant about rescue shots.
The FDA said that this epinephrine nasal spray is designed for use by adults and children who are over 66 pounds.
Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening condition that can delay or prevent treatment for some people, especially children.
The FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research has suggested that the availability of epinephrine nasal spray can effectively reduce barriers to rapid treatment. It makes neffy an important treatment option and addresses an unmet need.
Individuals with allergies can experience sudden and frightening reactions to certain foods, medications, or insect stings. Epinephrine is the only rescue medication used in such incidents. It is administered via a needle.
Neffy is made by ARS Pharmaceuticals, and it is in the form of a spray. The FDA suggests that it should be administered into one nostril if the first dose does not reduce symptoms. If the first dose doesn’t work, then patients should take a second dose. It also suggested that patients should be closely monitored after epinephrine use.
The approval of neffy was based on four studies that involved 175 healthy adults who did not have anaphylaxis. In these studies, researchers asked these participants to use neffy or other approved epinephrine injection products. Then they measured epinephrine concentrations in their blood. This showed comparable epinephrine blood concentrations between neffy and those products.
When researchers observed the results, they found that neffy effectively triggered the necessary increases in blood pressure and heart rate and treated anaphylaxis.
Researchers also found that neffy can cause some side effects such as headache, fatigue, tingling nose, throat irritation nasal discomfort, jitteriness, tremor, runny nose, nasal pruritus, sneezing, abdominal pain, gum pain, numbness in the mouth, nasal congestion, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting.
The FDA has also issued a warning about neffy that certain conditions such as nasal polyps or a history of surgery can affect its absorption. Patients with these conditions should consult a healthcare professional before using the product. Neffy also includes precautions for coexisting conditions and allergic reactions.
This neffy shot is an important discovery as it can be an effective alternative treatment for those suffering from Anaphylaxis. Healthcare professionals should suggest this to them. But they should also understand that it can cause some side effects. Hence, they can effectively treat those patients and can reduce the risk of these possible side effects. professionals
