Quviviq, a new insomnia medicine, has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The drugmaker believes that it can help individuals sleep better while also preventing them from feeling drowsy the next day. Idorsia, a Swiss pharmaceutical company, designed and manufactured the medicine, available for purchase in May of this year.

Sleep deprivation isn’t a new problem for people. According to the Sleep Foundation, about half of all Americans report feeling drowsy during the day. Over 35% of adults in the United States sleep less than seven hours every night. With between 10% and 30% of all adults who have chronic insomnia, Idorsia is hopeful that when its new medicine is released later this year, it will be able to assist alleviate some of the problems that are troubling Americans.

Users will take medicine before going to bed at night. According to the firm, it starts operating right away and works for a long time. According to Idorsia, the user wakes up invigorated and ready to take on the day seven to eight hours later. Idorsia CEO Jean-Paul Clozel stated that his team has been working on Quviviq for more than 25 years. The team was inspired by the growing number of sleep disorders worldwide.

The FDA approved the insomnia medication in 25 and 50 mg doses. Quviviq has improved the user’s nighttime sleep in recent late-stage trials. This has allegedly resulted in improvements in daytime function as well.

Sleep disorders remain a severe problem in countries worldwide, even with medications like Quviviq being licensed and distributed. Dr. Harly E. Greenberg, in a recent interview with Healthline, cautioned that medications like Quviviq aren’t always the best solution for insomnia or sleep disturbances in general. Instead, it should be considered an additional therapy option for people who require medicine.

It will be interesting to see if medications like Quviviq can genuinely treat the world’s sleep issues. It may be a massive success if an insomnia treatment can be developed that makes it simpler to fall asleep while simultaneously removing many of the drug’s other strange side effects. Of course, we’ll have to wait until May to discover how effective this medicine is in a real-world setting.
