A new study in mice has recently revealed a potential solution to childhood obesity by introducing a fish oil supplement to fathers as a simple dietary change. This can help reduce the risk of this growing health concern of childhood obesity. The World Health Organization reports a significant increase in obesity among young people aged 5-19, from 31 million in 1990 to 160 million in 2022. This also increases the risk of other health complications such as high blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, poor self-esteem, and depression.Â
This study was recently presented at NUTRITION 2024. It is an annual meeting of the American Society for Nutrition. In this study, researchers involved 150 mice. Researchers divided them into two groups and fed them a high-fat diet either with or without fish oil. Then they were mated with female mice. These female mice consumed a regular low-fat diet. They mainly wanted to understand the impact of a paternal diet on a baby’s health. Â
When researchers observed the collected data, they found that babies from males who received fish oil and fed a low-fat diet weighed less at 7 and 21 days as compared to those did not. They also found that female babies from males who received fish oil had improved metabolic health. Â
One of the researchers said that this idea has the power to change how they fight against childhood obesity. Â
Researchers are now trying to understand how changes in diet can affect the quality of sperm and how this information can be passed on to future generations. They are also studying the genes in muscles and livers to understand how females become more sensitive to insulin.Â
The results of this study are very important as they can reduce the risk of childhood obesity. But there is a need for further research to understand this concept in humans completely. Â
Fish oil is a safe and easily accessible supplement that can be used to improve the health of future generations. Hence healthcare professionals can consider these findings and suggest this to patients to consume fish oil. This will help to reduce the risk of childhood obesity. Â
