Ice creams in a bowl

People have an enduring love for ice cream, relishing its multitude of Flavors, toppings, and delectable textures. However, as adults, the pleasure of indulging in ice cream often comes with a sense of guilt and concern for our health.

It’s a common dilemma, prompting many to ponder the question: Can ice cream be good for your health in certain situations, such as when you have a sore throat? This age-old belief, associating ice cream with soothing throat discomfort, raises the intriguing question of whether ice cream has any therapeutic value when it comes to throat ailments.

To delve into the ice cream mystery, we turned to the expertise of Kat Benson, a registered dietitian affiliated with Top Nutrition Coaching. Her insights shed light on the potential benefits of ice cream in relieving a sore throat, a remedy often heard of but not thoroughly explored. According to USA Today, Kat Benson suggests that when it comes to soothing a sore throat, warm liquids are typically the go-to choice.

However, she encourages not dismissing the idea of ice cream altogether. She points out, “While warm liquids can be helpful, cold liquids can also play a role.” Although there may not be scientific studies specifically addressing ice cream’s efficacy in treating sore throats, the cold temperature of ice cream can offer relief by soothing the irritated throat and potentially reducing local inflammation.

So, is it acceptable to enjoy ice cream when you have a sore throat? According to Benson, the answer is yes. She notes, “Sometimes people find benefit from alternating between a warm liquid, like tea, and something cold, like ice cream, to help soothe a sore throat.” However, she advises individuals to complement their ice cream consumption with nutrient-dense foods, if possible, as nourishment is essential for a speedy recovery.

When seeking rapid relief from a sore throat, various over-the-counter remedies are available, including lozenges, numbing sprays, and liquid elixirs. These options can provide immediate comfort. Nonetheless, it is crucial to exercise caution and carefully read warning labels, as certain liquid varieties may induce drowsiness. Some formulations may include Dextromethorphan HBr, a cough suppressant often combined with liquid Acetaminophen for pain relief, which can have a sedative effect.

For those inclined towards natural remedies, several items commonly found in your local grocery store or even your kitchen can offer relief. A spoonful of honey, for example, not only coats and soothes sore throats but also possesses healing properties akin to Neosporin for surface wounds on the skin. Gargling with a solution of dissolved water and baking soda or salt can also alleviate throat discomfort, but it’s essential not to swallow the mixture.

Considering these considerations, it appears that ice cream, in addition to its delicious appeal, may indeed have a place in the repertoire of sore throat remedies. While scientific studies specifically validating its effectiveness are lacking, the cold temperature and soothing qualities of ice cream make it a potentially comforting choice for those experiencing throat discomfort. In summary, the age-old belief in ice cream’s ability to soothe a sore throat is not entirely unfounded.

Kat Benson’s insights suggest that incorporating ice cream into a regimen of warm liquids may provide relief and contribute to a more comfortable recovery. However, individuals should also consider other nourishing foods to support their overall health during such times. Whether it’s a warm cup of tea, a spoonful of honey, or a comforting bowl of ice cream, the quest for sore throat relief can be as diverse as our cravings.
