Healthcare professionals usually perform sleeve gastrectomy surgery to remove excessive body fat in people who have obesity-related complications. According to a recent study conducted by the Mayo Clinic, this surgery makes obese people with advanced chronic kidney disease eligible for kidney transplantation as it effectively helps them lose weight.Â
This research was a study published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings. In this study, researchers involved 104 obese people with advanced kidney diseases from 2020 to 2023. Then they divided them into two groups such as the surgery group consisting of 54 people who underwent sleeve gastrectomy surgery to remove their body fat and the non-surgery group consisting of 50 obese people who chose non-surgical methods to lose their weight. Â
When researchers collected the data and observed it, they found that the patients in the surgery group effectively lost weight and 37% of them got the kidney transplant quickly. They also noticed that the surgery had increased the chance of getting kidney transplants in people in surgery group than those who were in non- surgery group. The risk of the other complications was also very low in people in the surgery group. But the rate of hospitalization and other infections was the same for both groups. Â
Healthcare professionals usually don’t consider obese people with advanced chronic kidney diseases eligible for kidney transplantation. But this surgery named sleeve gastrectomy makes such people eligible for kidney transplantation by reducing their excessive body fat effectively. This surgery also reduces the risk of diabetes and high blood pressure in these people. This makes them more eligible for kidney transplantation. Â
Sleeve gastrectomy can reduce the risk of other complications and hospitalization, it will help obese people to be eligible for kidney transplants. Healthcare professionals should consider these results to make some effective strategies. They should try to perform sleeve gastrectomy surgery in obese people to reduce the risk of death after kidney transplantation. Â
