Study Publishes New Tool to Anticipate Nerve Damage in Chemotherapy

Taxane treatment side effects

A new study has recently found a tool that can predict the risk of side effects in the nervous system for women with breast cancer who are treated with taxanes. It is a cytostatic drug that is commonly used to treat women with breast cancer. But this can cause nerve damage and increase the risk of many health complications. This tool can help doctors prescribe proper treatment to prevent its long-lasting side effects in those who are at a higher risk.

This study was recently published in the journal npj Precision Oncology.

This study has found that some cancer survivors still suffer from side effects of chemotherapy treatment and it particularly causes nerve damage. This study was mainly focused on the side effects of taxanes. It is a chemotherapy drug that is used to prevent breast cancer recurrence. It shows some common side effects such as nerve damage. It is a very serious problem that can increase the risk of many health complications and even death. But there is no way to find out which individuals are at greatest risk of side effects.  The researchers conducted a survey of side effects in patients treated with docetaxel or paclitaxel, the two most common taxane drugs. In this study, 337 patients were asked about their nerve damage after treatment. It had been between two and six years since their treatment. When researchers observed the collected data, they found that the most common symptom was cramps in the feet as more than one in four patients experienced it. Other symptoms included difficulty opening jars and numbness and tingling in the feet.

The researchers studied patients’ genes and made models to predict side effects of taxane treatment. They focused on nerve damage and created a model that can predict the risk of numbness and tingling in the feet. This type of model was not made before for taxane-induced peripheral neuropathy.

The two models divided the patients into two groups such as one with a high risk of side effects and one with a normal risk.

The researchers used most of the data to teach the models how to work and tried to increase their accuracy. Then they tested the models on a smaller group of patients and found that they worked well. It is very important to make sure the models work on different groups of people.

Researchers of this study said that they have created a model that can predict the risk of nerve damage from taxane treatment in women with breast cancer. This is important because many women in the world receive taxanes after breast cancer surgery. This model can help doctors personalize treatment and consider both the benefits and risks for each patient.

The results of this study clearly shows that this model accurately predicts the risk of nerve damage. Hence it should be used in healthcare. But there is a need for research to see if it works for different groups of people.
