Previous studies show that the risk of the development of type 2 diabetes is higher for people with obesity. But according to a recent study presented at the Endocrine Society’s yearly gathering in Boston, testosterone plays an important role in the development of type 2 diabetes. It protects men with obesity under the age of 65 from getting type 2 diabetes. But it does not protect men above the age of 65. Â
In this study, researchers used data of 1315 men from the MAILES cohort study. These men were overweight and were aged between 35 and 85. These men did not have diabetes, cancer or any testosterone treatments before the beginning of this study. Researchers mainly wanted to know if there is any link between testosterone levels and the risk of the development of type 2 diabetes. Â
When researchers observed the collected data, they found that 110 men (about 8.4%) of the participated men developed type 2 diabetes after 5 years. They found that men under the age of 65 who had higher levels of testosterone had a lower risk of getting type 2 diabetes. It clearly shows having higher levels of testosterone can reduce this risk. But it was not seen in men above the age of 65. Â
Researchers also considered some factors such as age, waist size, blood sugar level, smoking and drinking habits, exercise and drug use. When they studied these factors, the link between testosterone levels and the risk of the development of type 2 diabetes remained the same. Â
One of the reputed doctors and researchers said that it is very important to maintain proper weight, exercise daily, and stop smoking and drinking. Men should also keep checking their testosterone levels. These habits and their testosterone levels can help men reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. Â
