Study Reveals Jaboticaba Peel Reduces Blood Sugar and Inflammation

Jaboticaba berry is also known as Plinia jaboticaba and usually grows in the Atlantic Rainforest in Brazil. It has a skin which is usually thrown away because it is very sour in taste as it contains tannin. But according to a recent study conducted by researchers from the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), the skin of jaboticaba can effectively treat people with obesity and metabolic syndrome.

This research was published in the journal Nutrition Research. In this study, researchers involved 49 people with metabolic syndrome and obesity. Then they divided these participants into two groups such as the jaboticaba group and the placebo group. The people in the jaboticaba group took 15 grams of jaboticaba skin powder daily. On the other hand, people in the other group took the placebo drug for the same time. Researchers tracked these participants and measured their body weight, blood pressure, inflammatory and metabolic markers and blood sugar levels at the beginning and end of this study.

When researchers observed the collected data, they found that the people who took jaboticaba skin powder had lower blood sugar levels after meals. The inflammation was also reduced in these people. The skin of jaboticaba contains a phenolic compound known as anthocyanin. It gives purple color to berry. This compound stimulates the cells of the large intestine to release GLP-1. This GLP-1 compound is responsible for the release of insulin from the pancreas and insulin helps the body use glucose effectively. This maintains blood sugar levels.

Researchers also found that people who took jaboticaba skin powder had lower levels of interleukin 6. This is a marker of inflammation and insulin resistance. As this reduces the blood sugar levels after meals, it can help manage and treat metabolic syndrome effectively.

Even though the skin of jaboticaba is not good in taste due to its astringency, extracts and supplements can make it easier to consume. The results clearly show it can effectively manage obesity and metabolic syndrome. So, healthcare professionals should make some effective strategies and suggest this with a healthy diet and exercise.
