World Ocean Day is observed on June 8th every year to create awareness about the rising impacts of climate change on the oceans. Oceans are one of the most important natural resources. Now, oceans may have provided something that can reduce the carbon emissions from around the world. Â
Scientists have discovered super algae to fight the rising carbon emissions in the environment. According to the scientists and as reported by WION, super algae are tiny aquatic plants that can remove carbon from the atmosphere about 40 times faster than trees. Â
Currently, scientists have designed a robot called Algae Phenotyping System. The robot scans the samples of algae and identifies their properties to make scientists’ work easier. Â
According to Dr. Eddie Custovic, a Senior Engineer, the robot can do the work of 20 scientists in a year. This enables them to reduce the cost of operations. Moreover, it helps in shifting scientists to focus on other high-level work.Â
Biologists are planning to use super algae in the textile, production, and food industry. They believe that it will solve the problem of carbon emission across the globe. Â
Scientists are in the final stages of identifying the best suitable variant of super algae that fit to be used. There are more than 300,000 strains of super algae. Also, the environmental conditions that require the super algae to grow to play a significant role in this finding.Â
Super algae trap the carbon emissions inside and don’t release them to the environment. Â
Peter Ralph, a Marine Biologist, says that the first step is to find the correct match, then the scientists will work on the environmental conditions to grow. After that, the scientists will find a way to scale it, he added. Â
Climate change is indeed the biggest concern that humanity is facing today. It is leading to several other problems like rising sea levels, droughts, etc. If super algae are introduced into the environment within a couple of years, then it may help in reducing carbon emissions on a large scale.Â
