Brand Name :
Dermabond
Synonyms :
liquid bandage
Class :
Wound Care, Tissue Adhesives
Dosage Forms & StrengthsÂ
Prefilled applicatorÂ
Liquid topical adhesive is available in 6- or 12-packsÂ
Â
Applied topically, it helps keep wound borders in place after they've been roughly measured.
It can be used with deep dermal sutures but not as a substitute for them.
Apply many thin layers to the wound's approximating edges horizontally.

Actions and Spectrum:Â
2-Octyl cyanoacrylate molecules undergo polymerization as initially before the application this is present as monomers. After application immediately the monomers of 2-octyl cyanoacrylate rapidly polymerize in an exothermic reaction due to the exposure to anions which are exhibited by skin moisture or wound exudate, binding to the most superficial epithelium. To involve in the process of continuous wound healing, 2-octyl cyanoacrylate develops a cyanoacrylate bridge a watertight barrier and atop the approximated wound edges. 2-Octyl cyanoacrylate have additional properties as antimicrobial against the non-pseudomonas Gram+ve and Gram-ve bacteria and MRSA (methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus).Â

Lactation: Â
Excretion of the drug in human breast milk is unknown. Â
Pregnancy Categories:Â Â Â Â
Category A: Satisfactory and well-controlled studies show no evidence of risk to the fetus in the 1st trimester or in the later trimester.   Â
Category B: No evidence of risk to fetus found in animal reproduction studies and there are not enough studies on pregnant women.   Â
Category C: Adverse effects on the fetus found with evidence in animal reproduction studies and no adequate evidence for an effect in humans, care must be taken for potential risks in pregnant women.   Â
Category D: There is adequate data available with sufficient evidence of human fetal risk from various platforms, but despite potential risks may be used only in emergency cases for potential benefits.   Â
Category X: Drugs listed in this category clearly outweigh risks over benefits. These category drugs should be prohibited for pregnant women.   Â
Category N: There is no data available for the drug under this category.Â
Pharmacology:Â
2-Octyl cyanoacrylate also known as liquid bandage or 2-octylcyanoacrylate. It has wound healing properties and adhesive properties.Â

Pharmacokinetics:Â
Limited information available.Â
Administration:Â Â
It is available in the form of gel and this product is modified as mini applicator with high viscosity and glue form.Â
Due to high viscosity, it is formulated for the deep dermal sutures and minimizes unintentional gel migration during its application.Â

Generic Name: 2-octyl cyanoacrylate Â
Why do we use the drug 2-octyl cyanoacrylate?Â
2-Octyl cyanoacrylate is also known as liquid bandage, used as topical adhesive agent for wound healing. Â
It is also used in surgical procedures to sutures or staples.Â
It is recognized for the initial wound healing during post procedures.Â
