Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) Inhibition: Paraoxon acts by irreversibly inhibiting the enzyme acetylcholinesterase. AChE is responsible for breaking down the neurotransmitter acetylcholine in the nervous system. By inhibiting this enzyme, paraoxon causes a buildup of acetylcholine at nerve synapses, leading to overstimulation of cholinergic receptors.
