Generic Name: triheptanoin Â
Why do we use triheptanoin?Â
triheptanoin is a medication that is used as a source of calories and fatty acids for people with a condition called long-chain fatty acid oxidation disorders (LC-FAODs). These are rare genetic disorders that affect the body’s ability to break down and use long-chain fatty acids, which are a type of fat that is important for energy production and other functions in the body. Â
People with LC-FAODs may have difficulty getting enough energy and nutrients from their diet, which can lead to serious health problems. Symptoms of LC-FAODs may include weakness, fatigue, trouble breathing, abnormal heart rhythms, and developmental delays. LC-FAODs can be caused by mutations in any of several different genes that are involved in the metabolism of long-chain fats.
