Gonorrhea is one of the common sexually transmitted infections (STI). It is a bacterial infection and needs more attention and proper treatment. It usually increases the risk of infertility. So, healthcare professionals prescribe antibiotics to treat people with this infection. But they are finding it difficult to treat since the bacteria is becoming resistant to antibiotics. Â
Researchers in the U.K. found a resistant strain of N.gonnorrhea was resistant to commonly prescribed antibiotics for the condition. They tested the effectiveness of two antibiotics named ceftriaxone and azithromycin. But this strain did not respond to these antibiotics. This was the first time when researchers understood that the current medications will not work and they need to find new medications to treat it effectively. Â
According to the Centers for Disease and Prevention (CDC), it is very dangerous among all the bacterial infections. But it is getting harder to treat and control since the bacteria are continuously evolving and becoming more resistant to antibiotics day by day. Â
In the US, healthcare professionals are still prescribing ceftriaxone drug to treat people with this infection and it is effective there. However, it is less effective in some places like China and Cambodia since gonorrhea is more resistant to ceftriaxone drug as compared to the US. Â
As more resistant strains of gonorrhea are being discovered, scientists are trying to find a new effective treatment. They are trying to treat this infection effectively with ciprofloxacin. Even though some of the gonorrhea strains are resistant to it, many strains still effectively respond to ciprofloxacin. Â
Scientists are trying their best to find some medications that can effectively treat people with gonorrhoea. Two drugs named Zoliflodacin and Gepotidacin showed their effectiveness for this infection in some trials. They worked differently as compared to currently used antibiotics and can help healthcare professionals slow down the evolutional nature of gonorrhoea strains.
It can stop them from developing resistance to antibiotics. Researchers are also working to develop a vaccine to fight against it. But it is still in the initial stages and will take time. As gonorrhea is becoming a big problem, it can become what experts call “Super Gonorrhea”. So, healthcare professionals should make some effective strategies to reduce its risks. Some strategies like safe sex and regular checking can help stop the spread of this infection.Â
