When histamine binds to H1 receptors, it triggers allergic reactions, including itching, inflammation, and increased vascular permeability.Â
By antagonizing the H1 receptors, mepyramine competes with histamine for receptor binding, thereby preventing or reducing the effects of histamine.Â

mepyramine’s ability to cross the blood-brain barrier also leads to its effects on the central nervous system. It has sedative and drowsiness-inducing properties due to its interactions with histamine H1 receptors in the brain. Â
