Actions and Spectrum
mepyramine exerts its effects by binding to and blocking histamine H1 receptors. Histamine receptors are found on various cells throughout the body, including those in blood vessels, the respiratory tract, the skin, and the gastrointestinal tract.

Pharmacology
When histamine binds to H1 receptors, it triggers allergic reactions, including itching, inflammation, and increased vascular permeability.
By antagonizing the H1 receptors, mepyramine competes with histamine for receptor binding, thereby preventing or reducing the effects of histamine.
Pharmacodynamics
mepyramine’s ability to cross the blood-brain barrier also leads to its effects on the central nervous system. It has sedative and drowsiness-inducing properties due to its interactions with histamine H1 receptors in the brain.
