Pregnancy category:
Category A: Studies that were well-controlled and met expectations revealed no risk to the fetus in either the first or second trimester.
<b>Category B: There was a lack of studies on pregnant women and no evidence of risk to the fetus in animal experiments.
Category C: there was evidence of risk of adverse effects in animal reproduction studies, and no adequate evidence in human studies must take care of potential risks in pregnant women.
Category D: adequate data with sufficient evidence of human fetal risk from various platforms, but despite the potential risk, and used only in emergency cases for potential benefits.
Category X: Drugs listed in this category outweigh the risks over benefits. Hence, these categories of drugs need to be avoided by pregnant women.
Category N: There is no data available for the drug under this category
Pharmacology:
It’s made of two key parts. Miconazole nitrate stops fungus and bacteria from growing. Hydrocortisone reduces swelling and redness.
Pharmacodynamics:
Miconazole blocks fungus growth. Meanwhile, hydrocortisone acts on chemicals that trigger inflammation. It can also narrow blood vessels.
Pharmacokinetics:
Absorption
Miconazole nitrate applied topically only allows under 1% absorption into the body. Around 3% gets absorbed by the skin.
Distribution
Miconazole and hydrocortisone primarily bind to proteins in bloodstream.
Metabolism
Liver metabolizes hydrocortisone.
Elimination and excretion
Miconazole is mainly excreted through feces. A minor portion of unchanged miconazole, alongside its metabolites, is eliminated renally. Hydrocortisone exits predominantly as glucuronide conjugates via urine. Hydrocortisone has an approximate systemic half-life of 100 minutes.
Administration:
Applying Miconazole nitrate/hydrocortisone is simple. Use it as cream or ointment. Put it directly on affected areas. Gently rub it into skin till fully absorbed. Be careful. Don’t let it touch eyes, inside mouth, open wounds. This could irritate those sensitive spots.
