Potassium acetate, also known as potassium ethanoate, is a medication used to replenish the levels of potassium in the body. It is a potassium salt of acetic acid.
Pharmacodynamics:
Potassium is the most abundant cation in animal cells, while its main cation is sodium in animal cells. The electrical potential difference over the cell membrane, commonly referred to as membrane potential, is determined by differences in concentration of these ions. Potassium and sodium are homeostatic ions maintained by ion pumps in the cell membrane. The membrane potential developed thus, creates the condition in cells to bring about an action potential, which is a rapid electrical discharge spike. The matter of cells to emit electric discharges constitutes the chief reason for their activities, the key ones being neurotransmission, muscle contraction, and heart function. In addition, for the proper functioning of kidneys, fluid regulation, blood pressure, as well as to have enough acid in the body, potassium is necessary.
