Serotonin Reuptake Inhibition: melitracen is classified as a tricyclic antidepressant (TCA), and like many TCAs, it primarily acts by inhibiting the serotonin reuptake in the brain. Doing so increases serotonin levels in the synaptic cleft, associated with improved mood and reduced anxiety.
Spectrum:
Major Depressive Disorder: melitracen is used to alleviate the symptoms of major depressive disorder, which includes persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and a loss of interest in daily activities.
Generalized Anxiety Disorder: Â It addresses generalised anxiety disorder, characterized by excessive, uncontrollable concern and anxiety over various life events.

Contraindication/Caution:
Hypersensitivity: Individuals with a known hypersensitivity or allergy to melitracen or any of the components in the formulation should avoid its use.
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs): The concurrent administration of melitracen with MAOIs or use within a 14-day period following the cessation of MAOI treatment is strongly discouraged due to the potential for a severe hypertensive crisis that could be life-threatening.
Acute Alcohol Intoxication: melitracen can potentiate the sedative effects of alcohol. It should not be used in individuals with acute alcohol intoxication.
Epilepsy: melitracen can potentially reduce the seizure threshold, which may elevate the likelihood of seizures in people with epilepsy.
Pregnancy and Lactation: melitracen is typically discouraged for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless it can be demonstrated that the advantages outweigh the potential risks. It should only be used under the guidance of a healthcare provider
