Category B:Â No evidence shown of risk to the fetus found in animal reproduction studies, and there are not enough studies on pregnant women
Category C:Â Adverse effects on the fetus found with evidence in animal reproduction studies and no adequate evidence for a result in humans must take care of potential risks in pregnant women
Category D:Â There is adequate data available with sufficient evidence of human fetal risk from various platforms, but despite the potential risk, and used only in emergency cases for potential benefits
Category X:Â Drugs listed in this category outweigh risks over benefits. Hence these categories of drugs need to be avoided by pregnant women.

Generic Name: atenololÂ
Pronounced: a-TEN-oh-loleÂ
Why do we use atenolol? Â
Atenolol is a cardioselective beta-1 adrenergic blocker commonly used to manage various cardiovascular conditions. It is primarily prescribed for hypertension, where it helps lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of cardiovascular complications. Atenolol is also used in the treatment of angina pectoris, as it decreases myocardial oxygen demand, thereby reducing chest pain and improving exercise tolerance. In the setting of an acute myocardial infarction, atenolol helps limit infarct size, prevent complications, and reduce mortality. It is also used to manage certain arrhythmias, particularly to control heart rate in conditions like atrial fibrillation or supraventricular tachycardia. Â
