Pregnancy category:Â
The lipophilic nature of demeclocycline allows it to passively diffuse through bacterial membrane porin channels or readily cross cell membranes.Â
It is a bacteriostatic medication that inhibits the growth of microorganisms. It keeps effective blood levels longer than tetracycline because it is eliminated more gradually.Â
Demeclocycline is not a direct bactericidal agent while it is a bacteriostatic drug.Â
Administer 1 hour prior to or 2 hours after meals.Â
Avoid taking it with antacids, multivitamins, calcium or magnesium supplements, iron supplements, or milk.Â
Generic Name: demeclocyclineÂ
Why do we use demeclocycline?Â
Demeclocycline is used to treat lyme disease, acne, and bronchitis. Â
It is also indicated in management of urinary tract infections, gum disease, malaria.Â
It is effective in bacterial infections including gonorrhea and chlamydia.Â
