Actions and Spectrum:
magaldrate is an aluminum and magnesium-containing compound. It works as an antacid by neutralizing gastric acid in the stomach. When magaldrate comes into contact with stomach acid (hydrochloric acid), it reacts with the acid to form aluminum chloride, magnesium chloride, and water.
This reaction effectively raises the pH of the stomach, reducing the acidity and preventing further irritation of the esophagus and stomach lining. The aluminum and magnesium ions released during this reaction also form a protective layer on the surface of the gastric mucosa, providing a physical barrier against acid damage and promoting healing of any existing lesions caused by hyperacidity.
magaldrate’s spectrum of activity is limited to the neutralization of excess stomach acid. It is used primarily to alleviate symptoms associated with hyperacidity, such as heartburn, acid indigestion, and upset stomach. It is not effective against other conditions or infections.
